An internship with the Sunflower State Games offers excellent insight into the world of sport event management, health and wellness, marketing/media relations, and graphic design and publication production. Interns have the opportunity to earn college credit as well as gain the experience necessary to compete for positions in these industries. There are multiple internship openings available for the spring and summer terms. Thank you for your interest in attaining an internship with the Sunflower State Games. Start/End dates are somewhat flexible. Hours expected are 10-20 hr/week in summer depending on workload. SSG is willing to work around work and school schedules. All interns will work from SSG Headquarters in Topeka, except the SSG Campus Reps who will represent SSG on their individual campus.
Public Relations Intern
Qualifications
Junior or Senior-level college student majoring in Journalism, Communication, Sport Management or a related field. Must be highly organized, detail oriented and able to organize multiple projects. Must have strong computer skills and possess the ability to learn the Vipa Solutions registration system developed for SSG. Strong communication skills and professionalism a must as well as leadership skills. Must be able to work well with others in a fast-paced team environment.
Responsibilities
Work closely with staff on all public relations issues including email marketing campaign, customer service, and volunteer recruitment/coordination. Also responsible for competition result collection and distribution to newspapers and the Associated Press. Assist with miscellaneous duties as needed during the Sunflower State Games including but not limited to data entry, athlete packet assembly and distribution and souvenir sales.
Event Operations Intern
Qualifications
Junior or Senior-level college student majoring in Sport Management, Business, Communications or a related field. Must be highly organized, detail oriented and able to organize multiple projects. Must have strong computer skills and possess the ability to learn the Vipa Solutions registration system developed for SSG. Strong communication skills and professionalism a must as well as leadership skills. Must be able to work well with others in a fast-paced team environment.
Responsibilities
Work closely with staff on all operations issues including data entry, entry filling and customer service. Learn and help manage registration system. Assist sport interns with individual needs including travel between sites during competition times and will report competition updates to the SSG headquarters. Assist with miscellaneous activities during the Sunflower State Games including but not limited to athlete packet assembly and distribution and souvenir sales. Assist with miscellaneous duties as needed.
Sport Operations Intern

Junior or Senior-level college student majoring in Business Administration, Sport Management, Communications or a related field. Must be highly organized, detail oriented and able to organize multiple projects. Must have strong computer skills and possess the ability to learn the Vipa Solutions registration system developed for SSG. Strong communication skills and professionalism a must. Must be able to work well with others in a fast-paced team environment.
Responsibilities
Work closely with staff, Public Relations and Event Operation Interns on all competition issues pertaining to assigned sport. Work with sport commissioner to determine equipment, volunteer and athlete needs including medals, t-shirts and athlete bag assembly and distribution. Assist will all data entry and sport database management needs. Assist with miscellaneous competition duties as needed. Sports available: Adventure Race, Basketball, Governor’s Cup 5K/10K Race, Soccer and Softball.
